German M38 gas mask can
With the use of poison gas as an offensive weapon in World War I, gas masks also emerged. From the M1915 and M1917 masks of World War I to the M24 of the Weimar Defense Forces to the M30 and M38 of World War II. During WW2, the Germans were afraid that the Allies would launch a poison gas attack on Germany in revenge for the gas war in World War I. All German army officers and soldiers were issued canned gas masks and wore them for ready use. Some German soldiers also used gas mask jars to carry their extra food and personal belongings.
